A Face-to-Face Company in an Email World

“Our CEO was thrilled to find a solution that used hardware, rather than having to rely on personal computers of varying quality,” O’Brien shared.

At Shift, a company that’s created a simple, hassle-free online marketplace to buy and sell used cars, face-to-face communication is valued above all other forms. But with 200 employees spread among five different offices (three in the Bay Area, one in Los Angeles and one in Washington, D.C.) and several more employees buying and selling used cars in the field, an in-person conversation wasn’t always an option—and Slack, email and Google Hangouts weren’t suitable replacements.

“Our CEO is a big believer in face-to-face conversations,” says Hannah O’Brien, Logistics Manager at Shift. “So much meaning gets lost in emails and messages. We wanted to see people’s expressions and gestures, and bring more of a human aspect into our meetings.”

Easy-to-Use, Glitch-Free Video Conferencing With Exceptional Audio

"The enhanced sound from Dolby Voice blew us away. The audio experience is about 10 times better—it’s so clear, it felt like putting on glasses on for the first time. Plus, the team also really liked having a tabletop device since it's something they were familiar with," O’Brien shared.

With the help of their Office Manager, Shift was able to quickly and easily roll out 15 Highfive devices.

“To install the devices, all I needed to do was plug the units in and place them on top of the TVs,” O’Brien said. “Then our Highfive Customer Success Manager came in and did a few training sessions. He helped everybody install the app, register their accounts, join their first Highfive call, share their screens and even brought in some Highfive stickers and T-shirts as an incentive—nobody turns down free T-shirts.”

With Highfive up and running, the team quickly and enthusiastically embraced the solution.

“Usually people don’t like when we bring in new and different technology, but with Highfive, that wasn’t the case—we were able to virtually eliminate user error. Our executive team was so passionate about it that they started to decline any meeting invite that didn’t have a Highfive link,” O’Brien shared.

Once Highfive’s consistent performance, high-quality video conferencing and seamless screen sharing became an everyday fixture in their now clutter-free conference rooms, the Shift team began looking into how they could expand their use even more. And after demoing Highfive’s Professional offering with the audio device from Dolby, the team knew they had found the solution.

“Our all-hands meetings involve a lot of people in one room, and the folks who are speaking aren’t always close to or facing a Highfive device which presented some audio issues. But the enhanced sound from Dolby Voice blew us away,” O’Brien shared. “The audio experience is about 10 times better—it’s so clear, it felt like putting on glasses on for the first time. Plus, the team also really liked having a tabletop device since it’s something they were familiar with.”

Now, with exceptional video and audio, the team uses Highfive to hold weekly company-wide meetings; connect with remote product, engineering and design employees to make sure their projects are on-track; check in on the field teams’ progress in procuring used cars for the platform and hold quick syncs or just catch up with folks across offices through an always-on video conferencing portal in the all-hands meeting room.

A Collaborative, Engaged and Efficient Company

“At our company, people want to participate and be a part of decisions. Having one easy solution makes everyone collaborate and feel connected without having to travel to other offices in person. We depend on Highfive here—it’s become a part of our culture,” O’Brien concluded.

As a result of their Highfive use, Shift has noticed direct improvements in a number of areas. Their ability to communicate clearly, for one, has greatly increased.

“We’re able to avoid all the miscommunications that can occur through email or chat. One time in particular stands out—we had 40-50 people in one email thread trying to work through an internal issue and it got really muddled. After discussing it in person through Highfive, though, we were able to quickly get the problem resolved,” O’Brien said. “Everyone is much more engaged in video calls now that they can clearly hear what’s being said and follow along.”

The team has also saved time by avoiding lengthy set-up processes and dropped calls.

“With our previous systems, it could take us 10-15 minutes to untangle cords and troubleshoot technical issues,” O’Brien shared. “But in a fast-moving startup culture, you can’t afford to waste that kind of time. Highfive allows us to join a meeting with only a click.”

Highfive has even inspired some positive changes to Shift’s company culture.

“At our company, people want to participate and be a part of decisions. Having one easy solution makes everyone collaborate and feel connected without having to travel to other offices in person. We depend on Highfive here—it’s become a part of our culture,” O’Brien concluded.
