Livongo Stays Connected Thanks to Highfive’s All-in-one Conferencing Solution

"Realistically people are usually joining video conferencing calls remotely, from the airport, from their cell phones, so we want to make sure that everyone can actively participate no matter where they’re calling from. Highfive lets us do that."

– Dave Engberg, CTO

problem

A plethora of annoying IT issues with existing conferencing systems

When CTO Dave Engberg started working at digital health company Livongo, his CEO wanted video conferencing to be a priority for the IT team.

A conferencing solution that’s easy to set-up and easier to use

Livongo needed a video conferencing solution that didn’t require too much dedicated equipment. They wanted to say goodbye to the distracting cords, webcams, and tripods they were using, and simplify their internal communications system.

problem

A tale of company meetings plagued by IT hassles

“I remember we had two consecutive executive meetings using WebEx – both started late due to technical hassles, and our CEO specifically told me, ‘Our video conferencing situation is unacceptable. Please fix it.’ That was my call to action,” says Engberg.

When Livongo’s CTO Dave Engberg started working at the Mountain View-based digital health company in September of 2016, he was faced with an issue in the team’s executive leadership team meetings: the video conferencing system. “I remember we had two consecutive executive meetings using WebEx – both started late due to technical hassles, and our CEO specifically told me, ‘Our video conferencing situation is unacceptable. Please fix it.’ That was my call to action,” says Engberg.

With offices in the Bay Area and Chicago, Livongo has a need for close collaboration that goes beyond executive meetings. Many departments – such as marketing and finance – are split between the two locations, so it’s necessary for these teams to have meetings that allow them to easily collaborate.

“I noticed with WebEx that they worked pretty well for one person sitting at a computer and presenting, but for larger meetings, trainings, and mobile usage we needed a solution that focused on peer-to-peer communication,” says Engberg. Engberg had positive experiences with Highfive when he was CTO at Evernote so he decided to give it a try at Livongo and see how the company responded.

An all-in-one solution with crystal clear audio and video capabilities

“We’re building out our offices now and planning on expansion. Employees actually asked me to add Highfive devices to more rooms,” Engberg says.

One thing Engberg liked about his previous Highfive experience was the audio quality. “A lot of research shows that better audio quality on calls makes remote employees feel more connected,” he says. Engberg worked remotely himself at one point so he understands audio issues first hand. “When the quality was poor, I would stop listening, stop talking, stop engaging with my colleagues – it was too easy to just check out,” he recalls.

Highfive’s addition of dial-out to their meeting room plans is also a feature that Livongo employees enjoy. “It’s a very nice feature,” says Engberg. “We’ve ditched our Polycom VoIP phones because Highfive with dial-out from the Dolby Conference Phones has eliminated our need for them.”

Livongo initially started with three Highfive devices, but they increased the number of devices to 21. “We’re building out our offices now and planning on expansion. Employees actually asked me to add Highfive devices to more rooms,” he says.

An inclusive office culture that fosters community and collaboration

“Highfive’s high quality became the new normal and it was just another part of their day. That’s when I knew I had done my job successfully,” says Engberg.

Whether it’s the engineering team that uses Highfive for daily stand-ups or the executive team that uses Highfive for more formal leadership meetings, Highfive makes sure that everyone can participate on a video call on the same terms.

“Realistically people are usually joining video conferencing calls remotely, from the airport, from their cell phones, so we want to make sure that everyone can actively participate no matter where they’re calling in from,” Engberg says. “Highfive lets us do that.”

Engberg notes that when Livongo initially started using Highfive he was getting a lot of compliments. “People kept commenting on how good the quality was and they were thanking me for implementing the technology,” he recalls. “But then I didn’t hear anything from my colleagues! Highfive’s high quality became the new normal and it was just another part of their day. That’s when I knew I had done my job successfully.”
